These represent the wooden posts at the founding of Reykjavik which means  "smokey bay". Smokey because of the steam from geothermal activity.

Pretty cathedral, behind me was boring statue of the father of Iceland independence from Denmark (declared while Denmark was occupied by nazis). 

The Denmark crown on top gets many bomb threats but strangely has not yet been removed.  Iceland declared war on Iraq but only one woman went. Everyone else stayed home and watched on CNN.
